Over het project MYTHIC
Aanleiding: de milieu impact van isolatiematerialen
Klimaatverandering en de uitputting van hulpbronnen in de wereld worden algemeen erkend als de grootste maatschappelijke uitdagingen. De bouwsector is verantwoordelijk voor 40% van het grondstoffenverbruik wereldwijd. De uitstoot van bouwmaterialen zal naar verwachting verdubbelen in 2050, als er geen nieuwe technologieën worden toegepast (EC, 2021). Op basis van de milieukostenindicator heeft isolatie de op één na grootste (na concrete) impact op het milieu.
Doel: ontwikkelen beste mycelium biocomposiet
In MYTHIC – Myterials for THermal Insulation in Construction is het doel om (in co-creatie met het werkveld) het best beschikbare mycelium biocomposiet te ontwikkelen, dat kan worden gebruikt als circulair, biologisch afbreekbaar isolatiemateriaal voor de bouw in de bouwsector. In recente onderzoeksprojecten concludeerden partners dat Mycelium-biocomposieten een hoog potentieel hebben om traditionele, op fossielen gebaseerde isolatiematerialen te vervangen, maar verder onderzoek naar de thermische isolatie en vochtopname is nodig om de bouwmarkt te overtuigen.
Partners in MYTHIC
In het project zullen verschillende partners samenwerken, zowel aan de productiekant van myceliumcomposieten als aan de applicatiekant. Sommige partners komen voort uit eerdere projecten, maar anderen hebben contact gezocht met het Centre of Expertise for the Biobased Economy (CoEBBE) om voort te bouwen op het bestaande netwerk. Er zijn verschillende MKB-bedrijven uit Nederland, maar ook uit het buitenland (Nylausn uit IJsland, Mogu Srl uit Italië en Corstyrene uit Frankrijk), evenals brancheorganisaties en kennisinstellingen. Avans werkt samen met HZ in CoEBBE en voor de microbiologische kennis werken we samen met de Universiteit Utrecht. Voor het marktonderzoek werkt CoEBBE samen met het lectoraat Nieuwe Marketing binnen Avans, gericht op duurzaamheid via biomimicry. Myceliumcomposieten en natuurproducten voor de bouw is het thema dat alle partners bindt.

In MYTHIC – Myterials for THermal Insulation in Construction goal is to develop (in co-creation with the work field) the best available mycelium biocomposite, which can be used as a circular, biodegradable insulation material for construction in the building sector. In recent research projects partners concluded that Mycelium biocomposites have a high potential to replace traditional fossil-based isolation materials, but further research on the thermal insulation and moisture absorption is needed to convince the construction market.
In the project various partners will cooperate, both from the production side of mycelium composites, as well as from the application side. Some partners originate from previous projects, but others contacted Centre of Expertise for the Biobased Economy (CoEBBE) to build further on the existing network. There are several SME’s from the Netherlands, but also from abroad (Nylausn from Iceland, Mogu Srl from Italy and Corstyrene form France), as well as Branche organizations and knowledge institutes. Avans works together with HZ in CoEBBE and for the microbiological knowledge we cooperate with the University of Utrecht. For the market research CoEBBE cooperates with the lectorate New Marketing within Avans, focussing on sustainability via biomimicry. Mycelium composites and natural products for the building industry is the theme that binds all partners.
